Contact support.bakarlabs@berkeley.edu if you’d like to discuss bringing a piece of equipment/instrumentation into the building. Equipment must be placed on leased bench, desk, private office, or private lab space. Equipment is not allowed in aisles, against shared walls, or on shared benches without prior approval from a Bakar Bio Labs staff member.
Shared equipment for tenants to use are available in every open lab, generally placed on "endcaps." Endcaps are tables at the ends of rented lab benches. Any equipment or small instrumentation with an identifying label from "Bakar Bio Labs" placed on an endcap is managed by Bakar Bio Labs (do not move). If you choose to locate one of your items (e.g. a balance, pH meter, etc.) on an end cap, you will be agreeing to that item becoming a shared resource for the whole building and your company would maintain the item. Please make sure it is labeled with your company name. Before placing equipment in a shared area, FIRST submit a ticket to request approval from the LabOps team.
Equipment placed in our Specialized Equipment Rooms is shared with all other tenants who have the Specialized level of membership and the requisite trainings and SOPs. If you would like to place your equipment into the specialized equipment rooms and this is approved by our Lab Ops staff, there is no charge for the equipment placement. Additionally, your company is eligible for 2 half price Specialized memberships when you host instrument(s) in the Specialized Equipment Rooms.
Suggesting Equipment for Bakar Bio Labs' Acquisition
If you believe Bakar Bio Labs should acquire new equipment for sharing across the site, we recommend the following process.
Find at least one other tenant whose research practices would result in use of the system a few times per month. The more tenants that are likely to routinely use a piece of a equipment, the better.
Determine the preferred model and additional features you would like it to have.
Contact support.bakarlabs@berkeley.edu and state your use case (plus the needs of other tenants). Please include spec sheets, part numbers of needed accessories and installation guides (if possible).
LabOps will set up a meeting to discuss the request in more detail.
Whether Bakar Bio Labs takes in a new piece of equipment depends on several factors, including but not limited to: unit price/leasing costs, breadth of tenant need, cross-company compatibility, space considerations, routine upkeep, and whether it requires facility upgrades (electrical, gas, waste disposal considerations, etc.).
LabOps will strive to provide a decision or update within 2-3 weeks of the request submission.
