Bakar Labs is a secured facility protected by keycard access, 24/7 camera monitoring via 32 cameras, and a direct line to the University police department. However, even with these measures, controlling access is difficult and we need your help to prevent unauthorized access.
BUILDING SECURITY
It's really important for all community members to follow these security measures to prevent dangerous or criminal activity and the theft of intellectual property. Also, click here to sign up for UCPD warnings and urgent safety warnings.
ID Keycard
While in or around the building, please wear your Bakar Labs keycard with the picture/logo facing out.
IMPORTANT: For the safety of the Bakar Labs community, please ensure that you promptly notify Bakar Labs staff if a person will no longer be employed by your company. Please collect their keycard and let us know the date of separation so that we can remove their access to the building.
Do not loan your cardkey out. RFID’s can be copied. If you lose your cardkey, it is important to let a staff member know immediately so we can deactivate the access for that keycard and give you a replacement.
Building Visitors
All visitors to the building without access should enter via the main entrance to be received by Bakar Labs staff. Please direct everyone who wants to enter the building to walk around the exterior of the building and wait at the main entrance to be let in.
Even if someone mentions the name of a company or person who works in the building you should still direct them to go around to the main entrance, or escort them to the main lobby yourself.
If you are uncomfortable with someone attempting to gain access to the building, say, “I’m sorry. I’m not allowed to do that as this is a secure building. I can get a building manager to meet you here in one minute.” Or “Is there someone I can call for you?”
No Tailgating
Do not hold doors or security gates open for people whom you do not know. You should only hold the door if you can see their Bakar Labs ID. It may be difficult because it may seem “rude” but for security purposes, it’s important that you do not open doors for strangers.
Do not ask people to hold the door for you. Distance yourself from the person in front of you and allow the door/gate to close and then use your key. Try not to put other people into the awkward position of deciding whether to keep the door open for you.
Do Not Prop Open Doors.
Period. This is the easiest way to allow unauthorized access.
Elevators
Scan your badge and then select the floor you want. Access is allowed to floors 1 (labs and café), 2 (loading dock - freight elevator only), 3 (offices), 5 (labs).
Nighttime Safety
If you ever feel unsafe or would like an escort, please call for a BearWalk: https://nightsafety.berkeley.edu/nightsafety/escort
A Community Service Officer will come to walk you to your car or the service boundary.
Computer Security
Physically secure your computers via locked drawer if possible or cable lock.
Keycards
Everyone working at Bakar Labs has a personalized keycard, which they recieve at New Member Orientation when they begin working at Bakar.
When submitting a picture for a keycard, please try to get a picture in front of a white or plain background for clarity.
If you have any issues accessing a space with your keycard, please submit a ticket.
Please wear your keycard visibly when in Bakar Labs. This will help facilitate conversations and help us to ensure the building’s security.
If you see someone in the building who does not have a keycard or a guest sticker, please notify the operations team via Slack.
Forgotten Keycard
If you forget your keycard, the people working the front desk will be happy to provide you with a temporary keycard to access the building and open labs.
Please return any guest keycards to the front desk as soon as possible.
Lost Keycard
If you lose your keycard, replacements are $40. The first loss charge will be waived. Any lost guest keycards will result in a charge of $40. Please notify us immediately if you lose your card so that we can disable it.
