General guidelines and policies for lab work

We are thrilled you have joined our vibrant and enthusiastic community here at the Bakar Labs. We have a few basic guidelines and rules to help our community function and grow together.

  1. No food/drink in the laboratory area. None. Never. No eating or drinking in the laboratories. Period.

  2. Please wear a lab coat and safety glasses in the active laboratory areas at all times. Minimum PPE in the laboratory includes fully-covered legs and ankles, and closed-toe shoes.

  3. Always wash your hands before leaving the lab. You will find hand soap and towels present at a sink in each lab space.

  4. Do NOT wear gloves to open doors, use elevators or anywhere outside of the wet lab spaces. If a glove is necessary, make sure to have one non-gloved hand to operate door handles and elevator buttons, and use a carrier box or a cart for your materials.

  5. Please make use of carts to transport heavy or awkward items between areas of the lab.

  6. Do not carry biohazard waste bags through the building. Use proper primary and secondary containment and a cart (if necessary).

  7. Please be familiar with the UC Berkeley regulations and process we use to take care of various waste streams. Including recycling, compost, spent batteries, biohazard, sharps and chemical hazard wastes.

  8. Please check in with a member of the Bakar Labs team if you will be using an instrument for the first time. Please seek training if you are unfamiliar with the device.

  9. Please sign out biosafety cabinets for use. Skedda is the reservation system.  Always leave the BSCs clean and remove your materials after use. See SOP for further information.

    1. Always disinfect biosafety cabinets before and after you work with either 70% alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.

  10. Only use 10% bleach solutions for two weeks at a time. Then remake the solution.

  11. Disinfect your lab area daily.

  12. Please use gloves when working with hazardous materials and dispose of them upon removal.

  13. Always process your BSL-1 solid materials by autoclaving before disposing of it.

  14. NEVER recap syringes for disposal.

  15. Please clean up any spills according to safety protocol (i.e. BSL-1 or BSL-2, etc.).

  16. Always use a 0.2-.03 µm hydrophobic filter and a dual vacuum trap (prefilled with bleach) when using house vacuum. These traps are to be in a secondary container and properly labeled.

  17. Label and date all containers with complete information (your company name, contents, and concentrations, etc.).

  18. Any equipment or small instrumentation with an identifying lab from "Bakar Labs" placed on the endcaps is managed by Bakar Labs (do not move, see #21) and available to the community. If you chose to colocate one of your items (e.g. a balance, pH meter, etc) on the end caps you will be agreeing to that item becoming a shared resource for the whole building and your company would maintain the item. Please make sure it is labeled with your company name. BUT check with a BL team member FIRST before placing it on an endcap. Contact support.bakarlabs@berkeley.edu if you’d like to discuss putting an instrument/equipment in one of the common core labs.

  19. Please do NOT prop open laboratory doors. Just no.

  20. Do not move or alter any Bakar Labs equipment. Please contact one of the BL team members if there are concerns.

  21. Please break down any cardboard boxes for custodial services to remove it. If boxes are not broken down, they will not be taken away.
