Bakar Labs Safety Walkthrough Checklist
- Are all hazardous chemicals & hazardous waste containers marked with the company name, chemical components, and hazards, and are they in good condition (not cracked/broken)?
- Are all chemical containers lidded/enclosed if not in active, attended use?
- Are flammable liquids stored in a flammables cabinet?
- Are there less than 10 gallons of flammable liquids outside of flammable liquids cabinets in each lab room (aggregate quantity)?
- Are corrosives stored in corrosives cabinet? Are acids and bases stored separate from each other in secondary containment? Note: Store containers with acids and bases side-to-side, and not above one or the other.
- Are liquid chemicals in containers larger than 500ml kept in secondary containment trays?
- Are incompatible chemicals separated by secondary containment or adequate space?
- Are there any hazardous materials stored in proximity to sinks so that they could potentially spill down the drain (i.e. without a secondary containment tray)?
- Are compressed gas cylinders secured snugly with two chains?
- Are all hazardous waste containers marked with words “hazardous waste” and
- marked with company name & EPA I.D. number
- marked with names of chemical components specified and their physical state (solid, liquid)
- marked with relevant hazard(s) such as flammable, corrosive, toxic, etc.
- Are fume hoods maintained free of materials, with unobstructed air flow paths?
- Are all BSL2 materials, locations and associated equipment clearly marked with the biohazard symbol?
- Are medical waste bins fully enclosing BSL2 red-bagged waste, and with nothing stored upon the bin?
- Are BSL2 work spaces free of liquid absorbent materials, such as cardboard boxes on floors?
- Are BSL1 waste containers marked as “BSL1 waste – to be autoclaved”?
- Are vacuum lines protected with properly set up liquid traps and hydrophobic in-line filters?
- Are sharps safely contained within sharps containers (not protruding)?
- Is emergency eyewash flush-tested each month, with recorded test dates?
- Is the emergency eyewash/shower area kept clear for easy access?
- Are fire extinguishers checked monthly, with a written record of inspection dates?
- Are electrical cords in proper condition (not frayed or worn)?
- Are electrical extension cords only used for temporary/attended operations?
- Are any potential mechanical equipment pinch points fitted with a protective guard?
- Is there at least 18”distance between stored items and fire sprinkler heads?
- Note: This video illustrates the importance of fire sprinklers and keeping this space clear.
- Are aisles and exits maintained free of obstructions, or trip/slip hazards?
- Is there any evidence of food or drink in the lab?
- Is the lab free of any unavoidable clutter?
- Are lab personnel wearing minimum PPE (covering from waist down) and using appropriate PPE when working with hazardous materials?
- Are objects such as chemical containers, supplies and equipment stored away from the edges of benches and shelves unless shelf lips or other restraints are in place? Limit overhead storage to lightweight, non-hazardous items
