Created by Jim Koman, Modified on Tue, 22 Jul at 4:30 PM by Jim Koman

Bakar Labs provides one biological spill kit to for each open lab. This kit contains the supplies needed to safely clean up small spills of biological materials.

To clean up a spill properly:

1. WATCH THE BIOLOGICAL SPILL CLEANUP TRAINING VIDEO

2. REVIEW THE SPILL KIT INSTRUCTION SHEET

How Do I:

Get a spill kit for my lab?

Labs without a spill kit can receive one by submitting a ticket to Bakar Labs.

Restock a used spill kit?

After cleaning up and reporting a spill, labs may ask Bakar Labs to replenish consumable items used from their spill kit (e.g., gloves and paper towels).

Report a spill?

Biological spills must be reported to the campus Biosafety Officer (bso@berkeley.edu and cc: Opal@berkeley.edu ; support.bakarlabs@berkeley.edu ) within 4 working hours - this is an NIH reporting requirement. When you submit your report, please include the following:

1. Incident time, organism (also whether it was recombinant or not), and quantity of material.

2. Cause of the incident.

3. Clean-up performed.

4. PPE worn during the incident and clean-up.

5. Was there any skin, eye, or mucous membrane contact from the spill or splash?

6. Corrective actions you and your team will take to try to prevent a similar accident in the future.

7. Was the culture recombinant? If recombinant, please describe what vectors were used and what was added to the agent.

Get an extra spill kit or additional supplies?

Bakar Labs provides one basic spill kit per open lab. Labs are welcome to assemble their own extra kits or supplement the kit they receive from Bakar Labs with additional items. Labs are responsible for replenishing bleach in the kit once it has expired (10% bleach solution expires after 2 weeks). Please keep track of the expiration date for your bleach (Concentrated bleach expires after 1 year).
