If you would like to expanded power options beyond the permanent outlets in your spaces, please keep the following information in mind:

No Extension Cords

Extension cords are not permitted for permanent use anywhere in the building. If you will need to expand your outlets in terms of number of distance, you will need to use a power strip. Please also remember to keep all cords out of walkways to avoid creating a tripping hazard.

Lab-Rated Power Strips

Any power strips in to be used in the labs must be certified for use in a laboratory/medical setting by an OSHA Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL). Here is one example of a power strip that has previously been approved by Thom Opal for laboratory use: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/tripplite-ps-415-hgultra-4-outlet-medical-grade-power-strip-with-15-ft-cord/apd/a0983525/power-cooling-data-center-infrastructure

No Daisy Chains

All power strips that you are using must be directly plugged into a permanent outlet. You may never plug a power strip into another power strip. Please note that the outlets on workstation and cubicle desks are not permanent outlets, and you may not plug power strips into them. If you would like to add a power strip to your workstation or cubicle, please plug it directly into the outlet on the wall of the desk.

If you have any questions about any of these restrictions or requirements, please submit a ticket or reach out to Thom Opal (opal@berkeley.edu).
