Sustainability Tips and Resources, for the Laboratory

Please let us know if you have tips to add to the Green Lab Checklist or additional sustainability resources to share with our community.

Thank you!

Green Lab Checklist

This linked Green Lab Checklist is taken from UC Berkeley's Green Lab Checklist, which was taken from UC Santa Barbara. We modified it to somewhat apply to our spaces here at Bakar Labs.

When you graduate from Bakar Labs, please take this checklist and adapt it to your future lab spaces.  We hope you find it useful.

Cold Storage Inventory

Keeping inventories of your cold storage spaces saves time and energy.  It also protects your precious samples and materials from temperature damage.

Mygreenlab.org Database of ACT Eco consumables and equipment

ACT database of consumables and equipment compiled by mygreenlab.org.

What is ACT labeling?  Read about it here.

Bakar Labs or UC Berkeley does not endorse any of these products, companies, or websites.  This is merely a resource you may find useful.

Closed-loop Recycling of Laboratory Plastics

UC Berkeley is partnering with a local company, PolyCarbin, to collect and recycle your used, but clean & uncontaminated, plastic labware into new laboratory consumables.  Close the "loop" by purchasing PolyCarbin products from several popular vendors.  See PolyCarbin's website to view vendors who sell their products.  See this Freshdesk article on what can be recycled.

Styrofoam Recycling

GreenCitizen collects, densifies, and recycles our styrofoam.

They take ONLY the white, crunchy, #6 (expanded polystyrene or "EPS") styrofoam.

NO soft foams, no dyed styrofoam, no cardboard or protective films, no trash, and no cornstarch peanuts.

Share/donate unwanted lab consumables (and some equipment) rather than sending them to the landfill

How?  The first step is to post your items on the #free-trade-sell Slack channel to share with the community.  If you don't find takers for your items, contact BioLink Depot to see if they will take them.  BioLink Depot donates lab supplies to local educators.

E-waste

See the Freshdesk article regarding e-waste here.
