Medical Waste Small Quantity Generators (SQG) at Bakar Labs

California's medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Public Health, Medical Waste Management Program and require you to register and obtain a permit from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

Tenants are required to follow these two steps to ensure compliance with our policies and the CDPH.

Step 1Register with the CDPH as a Small Quantity Generator, pay the Registration Fee by check, and obtain a permit number. Once you have the permit number, please send it to us via a Freshdesk ticket for our records.

CDPH Registration and the Medical Waste Management Plan

If your company generates sharps waste or BSL-2 solid biological waste, you are required to register directly with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) as a small-quantity medical waste generator. The details of how to register can be found on the CDPH Website, and requires you to complete form CDPH 8550. Please be aware this registration process also requires a small fee, to be paid via check when submitting your form.

In addition, all companies are required to submit a Medical Waste Management Plan (MWMP) with their registration. The MWMP for small quantity generators must be completed in accordance with section 117935 of the California Medical Waste Management Act. To assist you with creating this plan, Bakar Labs' Departmental Safety Coordinator, Thom Opal, has created a guide to the MWMP requirements that includes some of the details you will need to include in your plan, which is attached below. Please be aware that you will still need to add additional details about your specific waste management and disposal process.

If you run into any questions while completing this process, feel free to reach out to Thom Opal (opal@berkeley.edu) and he can provide you with some additional direction.

Step 2 Obtain your Regulated Medical Waste Disposal Account with one of our three approved vendors: Stericycle, Clean Harbors, or Eco Medical Waste.

Please note that Bakar Labs has negotiated special pricing for our tenants. Submit a Freshdesk ticket or email support.bakarlabs@berkeley.edu in order to obtain the price sheets for review.

When you speak with each representative, be sure to mention this to ensure you receive the discounted rate. Do not share another vendor's price list with a competing vendor. This could jeopardize these price agreements.

Once you sign a contract and have your medical waste account number, please send your account number to us via a Freshdesk ticket for our records.
